What Is a Wyoming LLC — and Why Do Survivors Use One to Buy Property?
If you've been researching ways to protect your address after leaving an abusive relationship, you may have come across the term "Wyoming LLC." It sounds like something only investors use — but for survivors of domestic violence and stalking, it can be one of the most powerful privacy tools available when buying a home.
If you've been researching ways to protect your address after leaving an abusive relationship, you may have come across the term "Wyoming LLC." It sounds like something only investors use — but for survivors of domestic violence and stalking, it can be one of the most powerful privacy tools available when buying a home.
When you purchase a home in your own name, that transaction becomes public record. County deed records and property lookup websites display the owner's name — and often their mailing address. Abusers routinely use these to locate survivors who have moved and are trying to start over. Purchasing through an LLC removes your name from that trail.
Why Wyoming? Wyoming does not disclose LLC members in public business filings. The state's records show the LLC name and registered agent — not yours. You don't have to live in Wyoming, and your property doesn't have to be there. Wyoming is simply the formation state. Your LLC can hold property in any U.S. state.
Is this legal? Yes — completely. Using an LLC to hold real estate is widely practiced. The county, lender, and title company all know who the underlying owner is. The privacy benefit is specifically about what appears in public records.
