What Are Data Brokers — and Why Should Survivors Care?

If you've ever searched your own name and found your address on a site you've never heard of, you've encountered a data broker. For survivors of domestic violence and stalking, these sites aren't just unsettling — they can be genuinely dangerous.

Data brokers like Spokeo, Whitepages, and BeenVerified collect personal information automatically from public records, social media, and purchase histories — then publish it for anyone to find, often for free. The result: your full name, current and past addresses, phone numbers, and relatives' names, all in one searchable profile.

An abuser who wants to find a survivor's new address can go to one of these sites, search a name, and get a current address in minutes — even if the survivor has moved, changed her number, and told no one where she went. All it takes is one public record with her name attached.

Property records are one of the most reliable sources data brokers use. When you buy a home in your own name, that information is picked up and published within weeks.

The most durable approach combines two steps: keep your name out of new public records by purchasing property through a Wyoming LLC, and remove existing records through a formal data broker opt-out process, with ongoing monitoring for re-listings.

Neither step alone is complete. Together, they significantly reduce your exposure.

Data broker removal and monitoring is included in Safe Haven Title's service — not a separate add-on.
